Canada's aging population

As of July 1, 2008, the median age of Canada's population was 39.4 years. Almost one out of seven (13.7%) was aged 65 and over, while 16.8% of the population was less than 15 years old.

Canada's aging index shows that In 2000, for each group of 100 children from 0 to 14 years old there were 65.8 elders (65 years old and over). In 2051, the scenario changes and for each 100 children (aged 0 to 14) there will be 185.3 elders or seniors mainly due to a combination of a longer life expectancy and lower fertility rates.
